Certified elevator and escalator mechanics have specific responsibilities under the law to ensure the safety of everyone using these devices.
Above all, certified elevator and escalator mechanics are responsible for full compliance of elevating devices in accordance with:
ASME A17.1/CSA B44– Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
Ontario Regulation 222/01: Certification and Training of Elevating Device Mechanics
All applicable Director's Orders
All applicable advisories
All applicable manufacturers' bulletins
An “incident” is defined as a consequence to a person or property.
Incident reporting is required by law
Refer to –Director’s Guideline #ED-230/09 for more details.
Promptly report all incidents, accidents, and hazardous conditions to the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA)
As a certified Elevating Devices Mechanic, you are required to:
Stay current with all licensing requirements, Code Adoption Document amendments, compliance standards, required maintenance schedules and manufacturer’s bulletins for elevators and escalators.
Report any changes to your certificate information to TSSA within 30 days.
Report any incident as described above.
