At the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), we play a crucial role in ensuring your safety as you live, work, and play in Ontario.
As a not-for-profit organization mandated by the Government of Ontario, we oversee the safety of many of the devices, systems and equipment you encounter every day, including elevators and escalators in shopping malls, amusement rides like roller coasters, ski lifts at resorts and hills, and fuels such as natural gas and propane. We also train, certify, or register the professionals who work with these devices, ensuring that qualified individuals are overseeing and maintaining the technologies and tools that make your lives easier.
The work we do helps the people of Ontario go about their day with confidence, knowing that the infrastructure around us is regulated for safety.
To enhance public safety, we engage in a wide range of activities. These include issuing authorizations for equipment and workers, certifying individuals and registering contractors, reviewing designs of new technologies, performing inspections, and investigating incidents. We also provide important safety information and resources related to carbon monoxide, patio heaters, elevators, escalators, natural-gas furnaces, and many others. This educational part of our work helps you make safe choices at home or out and about — and stay safe when you’re having fun.
